Once Upon a Time: Because adults can still enjoy fairy tales!

I'm honestly not a big fan of television. I can count on one hand the number of television shows that I've devotedly watched and followed along with over the course of my entire life. One. And I didn't even watch the last season of it. My time in front of the TV is primarily spent focusing on something else with television in the background. If my attention is fully on the TV set in front of me then I'm usually watching a hockey game, nothing else.

So imagine my surprise when I stumble upon a show that I had never watched before and instantly knew that it would be one of those rare programs that would ensure my place on the couch every Sunday at 8pm. I quickly fell in love with Once Upon a Time, and most of my nightly free time since I first watched the show had been spent on my stepfather's Netflix account catching up on the two seasons that I missed. If you don't have Netflix, you can easily get those two seasons right here.

This show is essentially about the Evil Queen, Regina, whose goal is to destroy Snow White's happiness the way that Snow (unknowingly) destroyed hers. Regina enacted a curse that took all of our favorite fairy tale characters from the Enchanted Forest and planted them in a town called Storybrooke (a fictional town in Maine). Regina said that in Storybrooke the only happy ending would be hers. Once Upon a Time details the lives of the characters since the curse was enacted.

If you think of Snow White and expect this show to be reminiscent of the Disney films that came before it you would definitely be wrong. It's not all happy princesses and singing animals, but that's what I (as a huge Disney fan) love about it. It isn't what we're used to. Things don't always work out perfectly. There is dark magic at work here (usually at the hands of Rumplestiltskin, who is undoubtedly one of the very best characters on the show. Robert Carlyle's portrayal of him is fantastic).

The show is a wonderful mix of what is currently happening in Storybrooke and flashbacks to what happened in the fairy tale world before the Evil Queen cursed the land. You'll see the Mad Hatter and travel to Wonderland, Snow White and Prince Charming (with the seven dwarves, of course) in the Enchanted Forest, and even visit Peter Pan and the Lost Boys in Neverland. And speaking of Neverland, who is my favorite character on the show, you ask? Captain Hook!

It's so entertaining to watch as all of these stories collide. Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood strike up a friendship in the Enchanted Forest, while Mulan and Prince Phillip team up to save Aurora. As someone who grew up with these stories in a cartoon form, my favorite thing about this show is getting to continue on with my love for the fairy tales in a more adult setting. As a child you certainly wouldn't watch as the Evil Queen removes the heart of the huntsman (it's not as visually gruesome as it sounds - there's really no blood and it isn't gory), but for someone in their mid-20s a show like this is an entertaining way to carry on your love for the stories you heard as a kid.

A get a huge kick out of seeing what characters make appearances. From the Genie to Tinkerbelle, Pinocchio to Ariel, and Belle to Maleficent. And when the show returns in March, another character will be making her way to Storybrooke for the first time: are you ready to meet the Wicked Witch?

After you finish the first season, come back here to catch up before season three resumes in March!

Once Upon A Time: Season 2
Once Upon A Time: Season 2

Season one sees the Evil Queen's curse break, but what happens afterward, and why can't the residents of Storybrooke step outside of the town's boundary? Get season two to find out!

Once Upon a Time - Behind the Magic

This book is a must-have for OUAT fans. It has pictures, interviews, an episode guide, and other behind the scenes info.

Get ready for the rest of season three with a preview of what (or WHO) is to come.

This show already has a Prince Charming, but the most charming character in my opinion in definitely Hook.

Who's your favorite Once Upon a Time character?

  • Snow White/Mary Margaret
  • Prince Charming/David
  • Emma
  • Henry
  • Evil Queen/Regina
  • Captain Hook
  • Grumpy/Leroy
  • Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold
  • Baelfire/Neal

I've never heard of this show. I'm betting it is not on one of the 3 channels I get. But I do enjoy old shows when they are converted to DVD. Will keep my eyes open.

Mad crush on Rumple!!! I love Robert Carlyle in EVERYTHING, but Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin is one of my favorites of his roles. I love the whole RumBelle phenomenon. I also think Lana Parrilla is the PERFECT Evil Queen/Regina.
